Tallinn, the capital of Estonia

The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  A wander through the beautiful cobbled streets and you can see the different history of this wonderful part of the world.

Memorably, the ruling Communist party was overthrown in the 'singing revolution'.  I think that tells you plenty about the place and its people.

This was our introduction to the world behind the former 'Iron Curtain'.  If you would like to know more about our inspiration then follow this link - 'Inspiration behind Tallinn, Estonia.'  Also if you would like to understand the memories it left us with then Janis also posted our 'Memories of Tallinn, Estonia.'

In summary, it is a wonderful place to visit.  The best times tend to be before, or after, the groups from the cruise ships descend on the town hall square. It is still very easy to find yourself a quiet spot if that's your desire.  Just remember comfy shoes, and stop for plenty of refreshments 🙂

There are no unsightly overhead power-lines in the old town, removing one of the obstacles which affect so many European cities. The other notable feature is the wonderful textures and colours ever present in the town.  From the cobbles streets to the beautiful architecture the town demands exploration.

The technical bits

The camera used was my trusty Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III.   Two lenses were in the kit bag for this trip, specifically the EF16-35mm & EF24-70mm L series lenses.  The 16-35mm produces the dramatic 'converging verticals' of a number of the shots which I like.  I know I may be in the minority. 🙂

All of the shots we captured in camera raw and imported into Adobe's Lightroom.  A number of the images were tone-mapped using HDRSoft's Photomatix to increase the impact.  The final clean-up of the images was performed in Adobe Photoshop, specifically dust removal and a final sharpening of the images.

A lesson I learnt on this trip is never pack a valuable lens in the hold.  I put the 70-200mm into one of the suitcases, packed in its own case.  When I got to Tallinn the zoom ring had locked, therefore rendering the lens useless.  To this day, I have no idea why I thought that was a good idea.

As always, if a particular shot interests you or want to know more about my workflow just let me know.
